Child Support Is About What the Kids Need. Full Stop.
How Child Support Is Calculated in Tennessee
Tennessee uses the Income Shares Model. That means the calculation is based on both parents’ gross incomes combined, not just the income of the parent who will be paying.
The core inputs:
- Both parents’ gross income from all sources (wages, self-employment, rental income, certain benefits)
- The number of children covered by the order
- Health insurance premiums and work-related childcare costs
- The actual amount of parenting time each parent exercises
That last factor matters more than most people realize going in. Significant parenting time by the paying parent can meaningfully reduce the support obligation. The calculation is formula-based, and the numbers move based on how overnights are allocated in the parenting plan. Changes to the parenting plan can affect the support calculation.
Where it gets complicated: income. When one party is self-employed, has variable income, or has recently changed jobs, what counts as “gross income” becomes a real point of dispute. Business expenses, write-offs, and inconsistent income require closer analysis.
Getting the initial order right matters. Tennessee allows modification when there has been a significant change in circumstances, but modification requires a legal process and takes time. Starting from an accurate, well-documented calculation is worth doing correctly.
Child support isn’t about punishing one parent or rewarding the other. It’s about making sure children’s needs are met consistently, regardless of what the co-parenting relationship looks like.

Establishing Child Support
Tennessee uses an income shares model. Getting the numbers calculated correctly from the start matters more than most people realize, errors compound over years.
Modifying Child Support
Tennessee allows modification when there’s been a significant change in circumstances: income changes, changes in parenting time, or changes in the child’s needs. If your current order no longer reflects reality, it can be reviewed.
Enforcement
If the other party is not paying what the court ordered, legal mechanisms exist to enforce it. I’ll walk you through your options.
PRICING NOTE: Child support matters are handled on a retainer basis, with retainers starting at $2,500. I’ll give you a realistic cost estimate in your consultation.
A couple of things on cost: court filing fees are separate from my fee, the court sets those and they vary by county, so I’ll give you a realistic picture for yours. And if paying up front is tough, we offer payment plans through Affirm (subject to credit approval). Either way, call the office or schedule a consult below and we’ll walk you through the process.
